West Ham United: Chris Sutton makes ‘impossible’ Kalvin Phillips prediction after developments

West Ham United loanee Kalvin Phillips has no chance of making it back into the current England squad.

That is according to Chris Sutton, with the Manchester City man having lost his place in Gareth Southgate’s setup.

Sutton made the prediction amid the midfielder’s disappointing spell at West Ham so far and indeed the England call-up for Manchester United ace Kobbie Maino.

When asked if Phillips has enough time to try and play his way back into the England squad on The Monday Night Club on BBC 5 Live Sport (25 March), Sutton said: “No.

“Because it was always going to be difficult for him anyway. And he went to West Ham for game time, and with the greatest respect, I do feel for him, he was very public about his time at Manchester City and the effect it had on him.

“He’s gone to West Ham, and he hasn’t hit the ground running. It’s difficult, he’s not played with any rhythm or confidence.

“Gareth over the years has been a stickler for loyalty, and he stuck with Phillips for a long, long time, but the fact Mainoo is now ahead of him in the pecking order, it’s impossible for Phillips to get back in.”

Does West Ham loanee Kalvin Phillips have an England future?

Phillips really did have an exciting future ahead of him while operating in midfield for Leeds United, both for club and country.

His displays at Elland Road earned the midfielder a big-money move to Manchester City, but it is a transfer that has not worked out for either party.

Pep Guardiola recently opted to loan out the 28-year-old to Premier League rivals West Ham, in a bid to get the player’s career back on track.

But again, the move has not gone according to plan, with Phillps really struggling in claret and blue. His lack of minutes, and indeed underwhelming displays when given the chance by David Moyes, has resulted in England manager Gareth Southgate dropping him from the international scene.

That snub is certainly understandable, with Phillips definitely going to find it even harder to fight his way back into Southgate’s thoughts given the emergence of fellow midfielder Mainoo.
