Dharmesh Sheth: Vladimir Coufal let down by West Ham contract offer

West Ham right-back Vladimir Coufal feels let down by a new contract he’s been offered by the club, according to Dharmesh Sheth.

Speaking on Sky Sports News on Monday, the Sky Sports journalist reported that West Ham’s contract offer to Coufal, 28, was based more on appearances and performances rather than an increase in his basic wage.

As shown in a clip on the Football Daily Twitter account, Sheth went into more depth about the Czech international’s situation.

“This is a difficult one because West Ham United, they do remain in talks with Vladimir Coufal’s representatives over a new and improved contract,” said Sheth.

“Talks so far though have yet to find a resolution and that is much to the increased frustration of Coufal and his representatives.

“Coufal, I’m told, has gone as far to say he feels let down by the club over the initial offer they’ve made.

“I’m told that initial offer was weighted more on appearances and performances rather than an initial hike on that basic wage.

“Of course, negotiations are still ongoing so of course, that could still change.

“He feels his performances haven’t been reflected in that initial offer so far, it should be noted, so far. But there is a little bit of a stalemate happening here so I think something has got to give.

“Coufal is not happy at the moment, his representatives aren’t happy at the moment.

“West Ham do realise they do need to reward Coufal for the performances he’s made in his one season at West Ham.”

Sheth added: “I think there is a deal to be done there.

“It shouldn’t be lost though that when they signed him on a three-year contract, they had a two-year option as well. So by rights, West Ham don’t actually need to give Coufal a new contract but they do realise he performed so well he does deserve one.”

Weird offer

As Sheth says, West Ham are not really under much pressure to get Coufal tied down to a new contract because his existing deal still has a long time let to run on it.

If they want to offer him a pay rise because of his brilliant performances then offer him a pay rise – he’s worth it.

Last season, Coufal assisted seven goals in 37 appearances in all competitions for the Hammers before assisting two more goals for the Czech Republic as they reached the Euro 2020 quarter-finals.

The former Slavia Prague right-back has had an outstanding year and he deserves to be rewarded for it.

But why are West Ham doing something that really need to do, but doing it so badly?

David Moyes oversaw a stunning season last time out but the lack of activity since then has been frustrating.

There must be some funds for the Scot to spend but the least they can do is offer players like Coufal what they actually deserve.

Hopefully things improve as the summer progresses but we’re not a million miles away from the season kicking off now.
