WHZ View: West Ham v Manchester United – 3 best players who’ve played for both teams

West Ham travel to Old Trafford on Sunday to face Manchester United in a huge Premier League clash in the top half of the table.

The Hammers moved back into the top five with a 2-0 victory over Leeds on Monday. United ended Manchester City’s run of 21 consecutive victories with a 2-0 win at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Both sides will feel confident coming into this one. Our hosts took all three points when they travelled to the London Stadium. Goals from Paul Pogba, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford gave them a 3-1 victory after Tomas Soucek had scored first.

West Ham will be without their starlet Jesse Lingard. He’s on loan from the Red Devils so won’t be eligible to face his former club. Lingard became the 10th player to appear for both clubs in the Premier League.

West Ham Zone decided to take a look at three other popular players to have worn the red of United and claret and blue for the Hammers.

Michael Carrick

West Ham

Carrick came through the youth ranks at West Ham, making his debut in 1999 against Jokerit in the Uefa Intertoto Cup. He scored six goals in 136 appearances for the Hammers, before moving to Spurs in 2004.

He spent two years there before a £18.6million move to United in 2006. Carrick spent 12 seasons with the Red Devils, scoring 17 goals in 316 games. He won everything there is to win at club level in this period…

Five Premier Leagues, one Champions League, one FA Cup, two League Cups, 6 Community Shields, one Europa League and a FIFA Club World Cup. He was also named in the PFA Team of the Year for 2012/13 and was United Players’ Player of the year the same season.

Teddy Sherringham

West Ham

Sherringham was one of the greatest strikers of his era. A well-travelled player, he joined Manchester United in 1997. He scored 31 times for the Red Devils, none more famous than his equaliser in the Champions League final that they went on to win.

He also won three Premier League titles and an FA Cup in his four-year stint at Old Trafford. It wasn’t until 2004 that Teddy joined his boyhood club and pulled on the claret and blue shirt.

Sherringham got 20 goals in his first season, helping us gain promotion back to the top-flight and won the Championship Player of the Season award. He went on to become the oldest outfield player in Premier League history at the age of 40.

Carlos Tevez

West ham

Simply adored at West Ham, Tevez joined the club under unusual circumstances just after the World Cup in 2006. He featured 26 times for the Hammers, scoring seven goals and helping us avoid the drop at Old Trafford on the final day.

He subsequently moved to Manchester United that summer and no one could complain. It was clear to see he had to be playing in a world-class team. He won two Premier Leagues, the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, League Cup and Community Shield in two seasons with the Red Devils.

His relationship with the United fans soured after a move to Manchester City, where he won more trophies. He’ll always be loved at West Ham though and we’ll never forget the celebrations of his first goal against Spurs.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers look set to sign Craig Dawson on a permanent basis for £2million.
