WHZ View: Class from Carlos and Antonio antics – three of our best goals v Spurs
West Ham face London rivals Tottenham on Sunday in a highly anticipated Premier League clash.
Victory for David Moyes’ men will see them open up a nine-point gap on the north Londoners, as the race for Europe begins to heat up.
Spurs are struggling in the league as of late. They’ve managed just won top-flight win in their last five outings. They are, however, into the League Cup final and look as though they’ll progress to the next round of the Europa League.
The reverse fixture was hardly short of drama. Tottenham raced into a three-goal lead after 16 minutes, thanks to goals from Son and Kane. They led until Manuel Lanzini scored one of the goals of the season to make it 3-3 in the dying seconds.
Lanzini’s strike was the latest in a catalogue of excellent Hammers goals against Spurs over the years. Ahead of the match Sunday, West Ham Zone have decided to look at our top three.
Taking the mick – Tottenham 0-1 West Ham – 27th April 2019
Spurs had moved grounds to the new White Hart Lane and were yet to concede a goal in their new home. In nine matches at the new ground, Spurs had won eight times and drawn once.
Enter West Ham. We’d picked up just one point in our previous eight away games leading up to this clash. The stats weren’t in our favour.
With 67 minutes played, Antonio latched onto a Marko Arnautovic through-ball to fire past Hugo Lloris. He then produced another iconic celebration for his personal collection, one that really wound up the home fans. It was enough to give us a 1-0 win and a good laugh.
Magic from Manuel – West Ham 1-0 Tottenham – 5th May 2017
Lanzini loves scoring in London derbies. This was by no means his best strike, but the importance of it warrants a place in the top three.
Spurs were ‘pushing for the title’ again after coming third in a two-horse race the season prior. With 65 minutes, gone, their title hopes were diminished thanks again to our jewel.
Andre Ayew saw an effort blocked in the box, only for it to fall to the Argentine who was in the middle of the area unmarked. He lashed in past Lloris and Alderwireld on the line, sparking mass celebrations in the home crowd.
Tremendous Tevez – West Ham 3-4 Tottenham – 4th March 2007
An icon for his one season with West Ham, Carloz Tevez opened his account with the most memorable goal for us in the derby.
We were fighting for our lives in the 2006/07 season. Tevez was yet to score for us but had been excellent throughout the season. He waited until Spurs at home to score a brilliant freekick, before running into the crowd at Upton Park.
It was an iconic moment, in what many consider to be the greatest Premier League match of all time. We lost the game 4-3, but went on to stay up after this passionate performance.
In other West Ham news, here are three things to look out for as we face off with Spurs.
