WHZ Tactics: West Ham & Said Benrahma can take advantage of reported Chelsea blow
West Ham United winger Said Benrahma has made a huge impact since earning his first Premier League start this month.
The Algerian international was made to wait at the London Stadium, but an injury to Arthur Masuaku finally saw an opportunity arise.
David Moyes introduced him at the perfect time, as he inspired the Irons to an impressive victory against Leeds last week.
With Chelsea up next, this is Benrahma’s biggest test yet.
The 25-year-old could be set for a boost though, with the Athletic reporting that Reece James is now a major doubt for the game on Monday.
That could force Frank Lampard to bring in Cesar Azpilicueta at right-back – something that Benrahma could really take advantage of.
Comparing the two Chelsea options via WhoScored, James is far more aggressive. The younger defender has averaged more tackles, interceptions and blocks – something that could disrupt Benrahma.
The Hammers winger would have consistently pressured by James but could be handed much more time on the ball with Azpilicueta ahead of him – something that could see him punish the Blues.
James more than doubles the attacking output of the Spaniard too, which will mean that Benrahma doesn’t have to consistently trackback – which is exactly what he wants.
Looking specifically at Benrahma, this is a huge boost for him.
The Algerian lines up centrally, but often drifts out to the left and switches with Pablo Fornals – as his average heat map proves.
Benrahma has averaged over three progressive runs per game according to WyScout, and he could get plenty of opportunities to test the pace and solidity of Azpilicueta, who hasn’t played nearly enough this season.
Azpilicueta has lost the ball over 10 times in three of his five Premier League appearances this season and exploiting the space he leaves will be critical.
The Spaniard has struggled against Palace and Southampton this season already, only winning one of his nine loose ball duels – something David Moyes will need to target.
Benrahma is getting better with each game, and the upcoming clash against Chelsea is an opportunity where he can really make a name for himself.
