West Ham United to seal Ryan Sessegnon transfer as player set to leave London Stadium in days

West Ham could look to seal the free transfer of exit-bound Ryan Sessegnon as defensive reinforcement this summer.

According to Jacob Steinberg, the Hammers have made contact with the 24-year-old about signing him as a free agent, with the player being seen as a “bargain” in the market, though his injury record is a concern.

While Sessegnon could be targeted to give Emerson Palmieri a little competition at left-back, Julen Lopetegui’s right-hand side could do with more reinforcement this summer.

Although the former Fulham ace is naturally a left-footed left-back, he has been known to deputise on the right flank and could be the perfect replacement for Ben Johnson.

With the current right-back’s contract set to expire with the Irons on Sunday 30 June, Johnson has entered into advanced talks with newly-promoted Ipswich Town [Dharmesh Sheth].

Vladimir Coufal – a favourite under David Moyes – has also been linked with a move away from the London Stadium, which would cause Lopetegui a huge problem in the position.

Of course, if that were to be the case, a natural right-back signing would be the ideal summer transfer, but sealing someone of Sessegnon’s calibre seems like a no-brainer.

While his injury record will put a lot of teams off, the move would be relatively low-risk due to him being a free agent upon the expiration of his Spurs contract, unless he has big wage demands.

Ben Johnson had looked certain to leave West Ham United this summer.

Sessegnon has showcased his talent in spurts, plagued by injury since moving to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but if the Hammers can keep him fit, he would be an extraordinary coup this summer.

He would need to be eased back into a full starting role, having only played two senior matches last season, so Coufal would definitely need to be at the club come the start of the 2024/25 campaign.
