West Ham United need transfer rethink as Fabrizio Romano provides Koni De Winter update
West Ham have been handed an early blow ahead of the summer transfer window after an update emerged on Premier League-linked Koni De Winter.
The Hammers were said to be one of the multiple English clubs keeping tabs on the Belgian’s progress in Serie A, having joined Genoa on loan from Juventus at the start of the 2023/24 campaign. [GiveMeSport]
The centre-back spots at the London Stadium have been targeted as one of David Moyes’ biggest weaknesses, with fans and media alike calling for Kurt Zouma and Konstantinos Mavropanos to be axed.
De Winter, at just 21 years of age, is an incredibly exciting prospect. He has already made his senior debut for Belgium after impressing for Genoa this season.
However, the most recent update will come as a massive blow at the London Stadium ahead of the summer transfer window as the search for defensive reinforcements only just begins.
As per Fabrizio Romano [15 April], De Winter’s appearance during Genoa’s 1-1 draw against Fiorentina triggered a £6.8million buy-option clause in his loan contract, making the move permanent.
Considering the young defender’s talents and skill on the ball, West Ham will be disappointed that they were unable to strike a deal with Juventus before the summer transfer window.
West Ham United suffer blow with Koni De Winter
Though naturally a centre-back, the 21-year-old is capable of deputising at right-back, which would have helped offer some cover for Vladimir Coufal, who could leave the club this summer.
It is also reported that Ben Johnson is set to leave the London Stadium this summer, who was the only player providing a replacement in the Czechia international’s absence.
For a player of De Winter’s calibre, though he has only made 42 first-team appearances at club level, £6.8million is an absolute bargain, one that West Ham officials will be kicking themselves over.
