West Ham United: Nathan Trott contract extension relieves pressure on David Moyes
West Ham United have today (29 June) extended the contract of academy graduate goalkeeper Nathan Trott to the summer of 2024.
The club announced the deal along with the added bonus of an optional two years that can be triggered at any time by the Hammers.
The 23-year-old is yet to make his first-team debut for the Irons but he is an England Under-20 international and spent the second half of the 2021-22 season on loan at Nancy in France.
He immediately became the number one in Ligue 2 but despite being one of their standout players, he could not save the club from relegation to the French National Divisions (third tier).
That might not be the most exciting CV or reason to put a new contract extension in front of him but there is a couple of very good reasons as to why this is an extremely smart move from West Ham.
No one is expecting Trott to be a goalkeeper who challenges Lukasz Fabianski or new signing Alphonse Areola but every club needs a solid third choice should anything happen to our preferred choices.
With Trott hanging around the club and hopefully playing for the Under-21 side every week we don’t need to scour the transfer market to try and sign a third choice, wasting precious time and resources while doing so.

His extension also has the added benefit of him being homegrown which means he helps us to comply with the registration rules in the Europa Conference League.
We need to make space for new signings that can play in all competitions and that means that some of our academy graduates will need to make the step up and help us fill the required quota.
Trott may not be Moyes’ ideal choice to be between the sticks but knowing he has that security behind Fabianski and Areola will be a huge weight off the Scot’s shoulders.
