West Ham United must swoop in for Kieran Trippier signing after Eddie Howe’s FFP admission

West Ham United must look to secure a deal for Kieran Trippier after Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe’s comments on Thursday morning.

Sky Sports North East correspondent Keith Downie published on X [8 August] a series of quotes from Howe regarding Trippier’s future at St. James’ Park.

Whilst Howe understandably backed the intention to keep hold of Trippier, the Magpies manager also acknowledged that anyone could leave his squad due to Financial Fair Play concerns this month.

This leaves the door ajar for the Hammers, who have been ambitious with their recruitment plans under Tim Steidten throughout the window and are seeking a right-back, with the England man on their radar [The Telegraph, 7 August].

West Ham eyeing Trippier move

West Ham and their need for a right-back has been highly publicised in recent weeks, especially after Ben Johnson turned down several contract offers to join Ipswich Town.

This leaves Vladimir Coufal as the only by trade right-back on the first-team books, and his contract expires next summer with the Czech turning 32 in a fortnight.

The pursuit of Aaron Wan-Bissaka has garnered much attention with some quarters believing the Trippier hunt is something of a red herring in order to snap up the Manchester United man.

Any long-term concern over Coufal due to his age would be repeated with Trippier, who next month turns 34 with his own contract on Tyneside set to expire at the end of this season.

It would be unsurprising if the 54-cap Three Lions international moves on this summer and scoops Newcastle a nominal fee, but judging by the Hammers’ recruitment so far, the club are looking for longer-term options to set up Julen Lopetegui for the dawn of a new project.

In other West Ham news, defensive target Logan Costa is expected to leave Toulouse this week.
