West Ham United must secure deal for Maxwel Cornet after missing out on Filip Kostic

West Ham United may have suffered a big blow in the race to sign Filip Kostic.

David Moyes was looking to sign a left-sided midfielder who can also play as a left-back, and had earmarked Kostic as one of his top targets.

The Hammers were locked in negotiation to secure a deal for the 29-year-old. However, he is not keen to leave Eintracht Frankfurt, as he wants to play Champions League football.

According to Claret and Hugh (30 July), the Hammers have missed out on him, and the player wants to stay until he becomes a free agent.

The Hammers must not waste time anymore, and they should focus all their attention on signing Maxwel Cornet from Burnley instead.

Alan Nixon reported on 29 July that the Hammers are still considered favourites to sign Cornet who has a £17.5m release clause.

The 29-times capped Ivory Coast international has already agreed personal terms with Everton, but the Hammers can move quickly and wrap up the deal early.

Having missed out on both Kostic and David Raum, West Ham must not linger in their decision. They need a left-sided player, and they must go for it.

The negotiation won’t be difficult as the player has a release clause, and it is well within the club’s budget.

Cornet is capable of playing at left-back, wing-back, as a winger or even as a striker, and he has got Premier League experience as well.

Ideally, he shouldn’t take much time in settling down at his new club, and start firing quickly. He could be perfect for the club as Moyes can use him in various positions including at left-back.
