West Ham United must remain cautious as Dharmesh Sheth delivers Amadou Onana update

West Ham United are closing in on signing Lille midfielder Amadou Onana but they have to remain cautious after an update from Dharmesh Sheth.

The Sky Sports journalist shared via his personal Twitter account that while a £33.5million deal had been agreed between the two clubs, personal terms were not close to being agreed upon.

The giant Belgian international, who made his senior debut for Hoffenheim’s second team before moving to Hamburg in 2020 and then Lille in 2021, is still under contract for four more years in France.

But the Irons want to end that deal very early by bringing him to the London Stadium and they could do so but they seem unlikely to get him in time to face Manchester City on Sunday (7 August) in the opening game of the Premier League season.

“West Ham United agree a fee with Lille for midfielder Amadou Onana,” Sheth said. “Fee understood to be €40m including add-ons.

“Deal LONG way from being done – personal terms not close to being agreed. Lille reluctant sellers but conscious they may not get deal like this again.”

Excitement is understandable when fans see that their side have agreed a transfer fee with another club but it all comes down to the player every single time.

If Onana doesn’t want to go to West Ham, then he just won’t sign the contract no matter what and that could be the concern at the London Stadium right now.

Obviously, there are going to be further discussions and there is an air of confidence oozing from Rush Green that suggests that the 20-year-old will put pen to paper.

Tomas Soucek will be looking over his shoulders too with his position under threat if the Belgian signs because there is no way David Moyes is going to drop new club captain Declan Rice for an unproven kid.
