West Ham United fans can celebrate as VAR changes set for 23/24 season

West Ham United, like many in the Premier League, have been on the end of their fair share of poor VAR calls since its introduction.

Jarrod Bowen’s most recent abomination against Chelsea is perhaps the worst the Irons have been involved in so far but offsides, in particular, are set for a major overhaul.

UEFA have been trialling semi-automatic offside calls for VAR in the Champions League this season and it worked tremendously during gameweek one.

Now, according to The Times, the Premier League are preparing to introduce the technology to the English top flight for the 2023-23 campaign, subject to a vote from all 20 clubs.

The vote is not expected to take place until after the World Cup in Qatar but the early indication from many executives at various clubs is that they would be largely in favour of the change.

The change would not only improve accuracy with automatically drawn lines over manual ones but also reduce the time that the referee has to stand there with his finger in his ear waiting for a decision.

It is the move that every football fan in the nation has been craving ever since VAR was introduced at the top level and should hopefully bring more people onto the side of favour with technology.

For David Moyes and West Ham, it will be a huge relief having had more than their fair share of misfortune when it comes to VAR.

And the fans can be sure that they will make their trains and coaches back home after each game now that the lengthy delays should be eradicated.

Nothing else will change in terms of fouls and red card decisions though which has to be the next step for the FA and the Premier League to perfect this much-needed technological advancement.
