West Ham should ignore assistant manager’s calls and try to sign Alex Scott

West Ham could do with more numbers in the centre of midfield next season, especially with Mark Noble hanging up his boots.

There are no guarantees that Declan Rice remains at the club next season leaving just the Czech Republic duo Tomas Soucek and Alex Kral as senior midfield players.

The Daily Mail report that the Irons are keen on signing Bristol City midfield maestro Alex Scott this summer but the Robins’ assistant manager Curtis Fleming doesn’t see him leaving.

“The reality of the football world is that if someone comes in and gives us £100million, we go ‘alright then,'” Fleming said, as quoted by the Leicester Mercury.

“If someone comes in with £400,000 you say ‘are you winding me up?’ So nothing is going to happen here, we’re not even thinking about it. We haven’t had it at the back of our mind and that’s an honest fact.

“We don’t sit there shaking thinking the phone is going to ring and someone’s going to come and take them.

“We really believe they are going to be here, the way the club is forming, the plan and pathway that the club are planning.”

That might deter some clubs from pursuing a deal but not West Ham, whatever price Bristol City may try and put on the teenager, the Hammers can pay 10 times over.

Scott is a supremely talented individual and it is no surprise that he is regularly featuring in the Championship at such a young age.

Being from the Championship, he will be cheaper in both transfer fee and wages than anyone of similar ability the club can get from abroad.

Add in the crucial homegrown quota that is a requirement in continental competition, signing Scott is a no-brainer.
