West Ham should go back in for Joe Worrall after what he did yesterday

A centre-half has been high on West Ham United’s wishlist recently but they failed to do any business in January despite injuries in that area.

Angelo Ogbonna has been out long term and Kurt Zouma only recently returned in the past handful of games but he now has his own, well-publicised troubles to contend with.

So as they look to strengthen in the summer, one player they were linked with in January has done something remarkable to put himself in the shop window.

No, it wasn’t a hat-trick from defence or a Bobby Moore-esque last-ditch tackle, but rather an unselfish act that highlights his team-player mentality.

Nottingham Forest’s Joe Worrall, linked to the London Stadium last month by The Athletic, put his hand up to go in goal after Brice Samba was sent off late on against Stoke.

Steve Cooper had already made his three changes so the 25-year-old stood up to the plate to put the gloves on for the resulting penalty.

Alright, he didn’t save the penalty but that isn’t exactly a surprise or what David Moyes should be focussing on.

Worrall is a crucial part of Forest’s defence and to take himself out of the back four would have exposed him even more but he did what was needed for the team like a true leader does.

It’s this leadership that might attract West Ham back into the race to sign him this summer as they could well lose both of their current leaders with Mark Noble retiring and Declan Rice attracting interest from the country’s elite.

Putting his ability aside, that kind of leadership might be very much needed next season and that is why Worrall needs to be high on Moyes’ transfer list when the summer rolls around.

In other West Ham news, a whopping £100,000 per week contract could be offered to this Hammers star to try and keep him at the London Stadium.
