West Ham prepare for worst-case scenario amid latest Callum Wilson developments
Callum Wilson’s new contract at West Ham could be a sign of defeat for the Irons.
It was revealed on Sunday afternoon that Wilson has agreed to a one-year contract extension with the Hammers, just months after he was heavily linked with an exit.
His goals since then have proved crucial to West Ham’s hopes of avoiding the drop, and that form seemingly hasn’t gone unnoticed.
And while, for him, a new deal will be excellent news, it perhaps points towards something far more negative at the London Stadium.
What does Callum Wilson extension mean?
This may be a cynical way of looking at it, but for West Ham to hand a new deal to a 34-year-old striker with five goals this season does not scream ambition, nor does it spark a lot of optimism.
Wilson is no longer at the level required to thrive in the Premier League, and for him to be given a new deal could suggest that the Irons already have one eye on the Championship.
But given the fact that they are now on level points with Forest and just one point behind Tottenham, there’s no reason for that to be the thinking.

Wilson would certainly thrive in the second tier, but if the Hammers are successful in their attempts to avoid relegation, they will need far more quality in the forward areas than Wilson is able to provide these days.
What do West Ham need this summer?
This is, again, providing they can escape relegation, but West Ham need a new striker, and that is blatantly obvious.
However, the issue is that it has been obvious for several seasons now, and we are still waiting for it to be addressed.
The Hammers have lacked youth in the forward areas, and while Taty Castellanos has shown some signs opf promise, he needs support in the forward areas.
Wilson will be nowhere near the level required to thrive in the top flight next season, and Pablo has already seemingly adopted a new role under Nuno Espirito Santo in the 10 position.
It’s a clear priority for the summer, with several areas in need of severe improvement.
