WHZ View: West Ham must make move for Danny Ings after latest contract reports

David Ornstein has reported that Danny Ings has turned down a new contract from Southampton, and West Ham should strike and bring him to the London Stadium.

The Saints are now faced with a tough choice – do they keep the 28-year-old for one more season and let him go for free next summer, or do they sell him for a potentially cut-price deal to ensure they make some money from his sale.

One would think that Southampton would probably prefer to sell this summer, which could mean that the Irons have a good chance of getting a player they were linked with earlier this year [talkSPORT].

West Ham

West Ham have Europa League football this season and just one senior striker in Michail Antonio in their squad, and given his injury record, you would think that Ings would get plenty of game time at the London Stadium.

Ings’ goalscoring record speaks for itself. In 100 games for the Saints, he has scored 46 goals while his overall Premier League record stands at 55 goals in 140 appearances, which is better than one goal every three games.

Even though West Ham had a brilliant season in the 2020/21 campaign and Southampton faltered after a good start, Ings would still have been the Hammers’ top goalscorer with 12 goals, so adding him could be just who they need [WhoScored].

Regular Last Word on Spurs contributor Lee McQueen also described Ings as ‘absolutely phenomenal’ in September last year [Last Word on Spurs].

This news about Ings’ contract should have sprung West Ham into life, and they really should be all over this deal.

Signing a player like Ings could allow David Moyes to build on the 2020/21 campaign and not rely heavily on Antonio.

This seems like an absolute no-brainer, and it would be a surprise if the club doesn’t at least make some sort of attempt for Ings.
