Tomas Soucek hits new low in West Ham United v Chelsea as alarming stat emerges

Tomas Soucek hit an alarming new low as West Ham United drew 1-1 with Chelsea on Saturday (11 February).

The midfielder, 27, has been making the headlines for all of the wrong reasons over the last few days as he was perhaps lucky to not give a penalty away in the final moments of the game.

Much has been made of the “handball” that was not given as Chelsea went in search of what may have been a late winner at the London Stadium.

Soucek replaced Lucas Paqueta after just 14 minutes of action as the Brazilian picked up an early injury.

If Soucek is going to be replacing Paqueta while he is out injured then the early signs were not promising.

As per WhoScored, Soucek registered a 52.2% passing accuracy during his 75 minutes on the pitch. He misplaced half of the passes he attempted.

For context, the next lowest accuracy of an outfield Hammers player who played more than half an hour was Michail Antonio, who registered an accuracy of 63.6%.

Every other player registered 70% or above, what you would expect from a player playing in the best league in the world.

West Ham

This season has been one to forget for Soucek so far. He cannot complain about only playing the full 90 minutes once in his last nine Premier League outings.

With performances like his against Chelsea, how could he? Where is the Soucek that scored 10 league goals in the 2020-21 season?

You could forgive his poor play if he was at least sticking the ball in the net but that simply isn’t happening. He has scored one Premier League goal this season and has also only registered one league assist, it’s just not good enough.

In fact, Soucek giving away a needless late penalty would have been the perfect cap on an underwhelming performance that should have every West Ham fan worried as they await news on Lucas Paqueta’s fitness.
