This is the real reason why Callum Wilson failed at West Ham as talks now underway over exit
Callum Wilson’s time at West Ham United is set to come to an end after just five months at the London Stadium.
Wilson is expected to leave West Ham in the January window following confirmation that the Hammers have completed two striker signings.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side brought in Pablo Felipe from Gil Vicente last week, before announcing Taty Castellanos’ arrival at the London Stadium on Monday.
However, the new additions seemingly signal Wilson’s West Ham departure, ending an underwhelming and very brief spell in East London.
Nuno Espirito Santo ruined Callum Wilson at West Ham
West Ham signed Wilson over the summer on a free transfer after he failed to agree on a new deal with Newcastle United.
The 33-year-old scored just once in his first six Premier League games, before Graham Potter was sacked and replaced by Nuno.
It became immediately clear that the Portuguese boss was not a fan of Wilson though.
The Englishman didn’t play a single minute of Nuno’s first three games in charge, remaining an unused substitute as Niclas Fullkrug and Callum Marshall were preferred.
Wilson eventually forced his way into the team, scoring three times in two matches against Burnley and Bournemouth.
However, the former Newcastle man has now failed to find the back of the net since mid-November, and Nuno has brought in replacements at the first possible opportunity.
Is Callum Wilson’s departure due to financial reasons?
It has been widely reported that Wilson was effectively on a ‘pay-per-play’ contract at the London Stadium, with the deal heavily incentivised towards the number of appearances he made.
There were some rumours that he was being left on the bench due to his high appearance fee, but these were quickly quashed by club sources.
It appears that Nuno simply didn’t fancy Wilson from the moment he got to the London Stadium, and had made his mind up before even giving the striker a chance to prove himself.
West Ham fans will be desperately hoping that their new signings hit the ground running, so they don’t regret letting a player with so much Premier League experience depart.
