Marko Arnautovic would like West Ham return – what about the fans?

Marko Arnautovic is keen on a return to West Ham in the summer according to talkSPORT transfer expert Alex Crook.

It is believed that David Moyes is keen on the Austrian, who he managed in his first spell as Hammers boss in 2017/18.

Arnautovic requested to leave East London in 2019 to join up with the Chinese Super League side Shanghai Port, where he has scored 20 goals in 39 games.

Rumours have circulated for several weeks linking Arnautovic back to his former club, and Crook provided an update on talkSPORT’s GameDay podcast.

He said, “A few murmurings that Marko Arnautovic would fancy a return to the London Stadium. I think David Moyes would probably welcome that from what I’m told.

“I’m not convinced the fans and the owners would.”

There two talking points to come out of Crook’s update – Moyes being a fan of Arnautovic and the fact that the Austrian’s return might not sit well with supporters.

He left the club in a very disappointing fashion and showed no loyalty whatsoever, so why should we still offer him a lifeline?

Some sections of the fanbase will forgive the striker but others will not, and the last thing we want is a rift after such a positive season.

For once, it seems the players, fans, board and management are pulling in the same direction, and it is producing results.

It is not worth upsetting some just to see a 32-year-old maverick return.

There are also question marks around Arnautovic’s ability, as surely we could, and should, do better in order to compete in the Europa League.

He has not exactly taken China by storm and considering his age we wonder if he was the same player that left the London Stadium two years ago.

It is a little worrying that Moyes appears to be keen on the attacker, therefore.

We of course trust the Scot’s judgement after turning around our fortunes, but now is the time to build for the future by signing a young, hungry forward.

And now we have the added appeal of Europa League football we must take advantage of our increased attraction.
