Jarrod Bowen has to learn after Lucas Paqueta scenes vs Liverpool, it could’ve been avoided
Jarrod Bowen watched up close as Lucas Paqueta was issued a red card in West Ham United’s loss to Liverpool.
Paqueta was labelled “ridiculous” for his sending off late on in Sunday’s contest, which could easily have been avoided.
The Brazil international was was issued two yellow cards in quick succession by referee Darren England for dissent after being penalised for a foul.
West Ham Zone has been exclusively told that Paqueta could face an extended ban for West Ham as a result of his petulance.
However, all this could have been avoided – and West Ham skipper Bowen can certainly learn from the situation.
Jarrod Bowen needs to show more leadership skills
Paqueta‘s sending off was one of many disappointments in West Ham’s 2-0 loss to Liverpool at the London Stadium.
The 28-year-old, who was only just returning from a suspension, run his mouth for too long and was sent off as a result.
What was noticeable, though, was that skipper Bowen did not rush over to calm his teammate down. And when he did get to the scene, he just stood there.
| Season | Appearances | Yellow cards | Red cards |
| 2022-23 | 28 | 5 | 0 |
| 2023-24 | 31 | 10 | 0 |
| 2024-25 | 33 | 10 | 0 |
| 2025-26 | 12 | 5 | 1 |
While Paqueta must take the majority of the blame for the red card, Bowen could have intervened and prevented the second yellow from being issued.
Even by simply getting between his teammate and the referee, it may have done enough to defuse the situation in time.
Bowen is a simply fantastic player, but being a vocal leader is perhaps one area where he can still improve. In many ways, it’s not too dissimilar to predecessor Declan Rice.
Bowen pays tribute to Billy Bonds
The loss to Liverpool came hours after West Ham announced the death of Billy Bonds, aged 79.
Bonds passed away peacefully and surrounded by his family.
Bowen paid his own tribute to Bonds ahead of the Liverpool game, saying: “What he meant for this club, what he achieved for this club, it’s a sad day for everyone.
“I know the supporters will make noise for him today, which will be a good thing for his family, and our condolences go to them.
“He’s probably going to go down as West Ham’s biggest legend and the best club captain they’ve had as well.
“He achieved so much here and I’ll never emulate that success, but to put on the captain’s armband like he did is a big thing for me.“
Bowen is very much following in Bonds’ footsteps by wearing the West Ham armband, and he is a legend among Hammers fans in his own right.
While Bowen is the best player in this West Ham squad, though, there is still room for improvement on the basis of Paqueta’s sending off.
