Graham Potter to West Ham could scupper Carney Chukwuemeka transfer

Julen Lopetegui’s sack saga at West Ham United seems to finally be coming to an end.

With the Hammers sitting six points clear of the relegation zone, talkSPORT reported (6 January) that the East London outfit finally made the decision to part ways with the Spaniard.

With the 58-year-old’s exit seemingly imminent, David Sullivan will be keen not to waste any time in appointing a replacement to ensure that the appropriate work can be done during the January transfer window.

The Times (6 January) reported that it is Graham Potter who has been identified to take over with West Ham offering the former Chelsea boss a deal until the end of the season.

This will no doubt come as welcome news to many supporters at the London Stadium who are longing to see their side produce better performances in the second half of the campaign.

Furthermore, with the January transfer window underway, Potter has a good reputation for developing younger players, which will be a source of excitement.

Graham Potter appointment could call off Carney Chukwuemeka transfer at West Ham

While the appointment of Potter is an exciting prospect for many at The London Stadium, it is one that could call off the arrival of Carney Chukwuemeka.

The Chelsea midfielder has previously been linked with a move to East London as reported by GiveMeSport [20 December] with The Telegraph (5 January) also claiming that the 21-year-old remains on the Hammers’ radar.

However, after the time the pair spent together at Chelsea, it could be unlikely to see them working together once more.

Journalism Simon Phillips told GiveMeSport back in February 2023 that it was “really weird” how little game time was being afford to Chukwuemeka by then Blues boss Potter and that his reluctance to use him after a bright start to life at Stamford Bridge caused “tension” between him and the fanbase.

With the midfielder still struggling to get minutes at Stamford Bridge, any move away would be with the hope of regular football in mind and he may be reluctant to trust Potter will give him the first-team action he is craving.

Supporters at West Ham may be looking at Potter with excitement of a fresh start but you can’t help but feel the interest in Chukwuemeka will wane if he is appointed.

In other West Ham news, Potter could have a sizeable transfer kitty if he is appointed by the Hammers.
