Door open for West Ham United to sign Lewis O’Brien after Leeds United look for option elsewhere

West Ham have now been presented with the golden opportunity to sign Huddersfield Town midfielder Lewis O’Brien this summer.

Huddersfield Examiner reported via their print edition on 9 June (back page) that the Hammers retain an interest in the player, with Leeds moving out of the race.

The Whites are showing keen interest in signing Bayern Munich midfielder Marc Roca this summer [Daily Mail], which means they effectively have ended their interest in O’Brien.

Unless Kalvin Phillips now leaves the club, Leeds probably won’t need another midfielder in their ranks. The news will come as a huge boost for the Hammers.

It’s an open secret that David Moyes needs to add to his central midfield options this summer.

Mark Noble has retired and Alex Kral’s loan move is unlikely to be turned into a permanent deal.

It leaves the Hammers with only Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek as natural central midfielders in their squad. Also, there is a strong possibility that Rice could leave if any potential club comes up with a massive offer.

O’Brien has been brilliant for Huddersfield in the past few seasons, and he would be a smart signing for the club.

He spent his entire career with Huddersfield and appeared 50 times for the Terriers last season.

He has a £12million release clause in his contract, and that is well within the Hammers’ budget.

Moyes has previously signed players from the Championship and the Hammers should be able to secure his signature with Leeds now out of the way.
