David Sullivan fingerprints all over West Ham deal for N’Golo Kante amid Sky Sports update

West Ham United are reportedly in the hunt to sign N’Golo Kante from Al-Ittihad in what could prove to be David Sullivan meddling with transfers again.

As reported by Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth (19 July), the rumours surrounding Kante and West Ham are true. The deal could cost in excess of £20 million but at this moment in time, the Hammers are still deciding whether or not to make a formal bid for the former two-time Premier League champion.

Between his wage bill and a two-year contract, there are certainly hurdles to overcome – but it feels like the kind of no-nonsense ‘go for it’ approach that we’d commonly associate with co-owner Sullivan.

West Ham’s big move

Ever since becoming a consistent presence in European football, West Ham have really been stepping things up in the transfer market. They haven’t been afraid to put it all on the line in the name of improving their fortunes, and in order to do that, they have to spend big.

In the last few years alone they’ve successfully brought in some very notable players. Gianluca Scamacca, Emerson Palmieri, Alphonse Areola and Kurt Zouma are just a few who come to mind.

Now while those have worked out pretty well for the most part, they’ve also had a few misses. Two incoming players from a different era were Samir Nasri and Patrice Evra, two Frenchmen who were brought in with the hope that they could make some noise.

They largely failed to do so. Still, with Kante, it feels different – and a big part of that is UEFA Euro 2024. While he may have been plying his trade in Saudi Arabia for the last year or so, his performances for France were pretty remarkable in Germany.

It was the kind of wake-up call that reminded us all of what he was able to produce for Leicester City and Chelsea.

Sure, there’s been uncertainty surrounding Sullivan’s future, but he’s always tried to make an impact in one way or another with transfers. Even with Kante being 33 years old, we still anticipate a big push to get the job done here.
