David Moyes must haul off Nayef Aguerd after ‘horrific mix-up’ for West Ham v Everton

David Moyes must haul Nayef Aguerd off the pitch after the West Ham defender had a “horrific mix-up” in the first half against Everton.

The centre-back allowed Toffees forward Jack Harrison a clear chance on goal after what looked like a communication breakdown with Lucas Paqueta, but fortunately, his effort did not trouble Alphonse Areloa in the net.

Sky Sports journalist Oliver Yew noted the mistake, saying as quoted on Sky Sports’ live blog of the game (29 October, 13:27): “Paqueta and Aguerd breathe a huge sigh of relief! It’s a horrific mix-up and Harrison pounces. But just like Bowen moments ago, it’s a really tame finish from the former Leeds winger.”

The Moroccan international has faced plenty of criticism this season for some suspect performances, but luckily, the Elland Road loanee’s attempt was weak.

The Hammers slogged out an uneventful first half at the London Stadium against Sean Dyche’s side and entered the dressing room at 0-0.

However, it could have been much worse if Aguerd’s mistake had been capitalised on, but with just six shots from both teams in the opening 45 minutes, the crowd were still waiting for the game to liven up.

Per SofaScore, Aguerd managed 53 touches and 85 per cent pass accuracy, so has seen plenty of the ball in the first half. However, having lost possession eight times and failed to make a single tackle, the Toffees could have been kept more quiet if the 27-year-old had been more vigilant.

West Ham’s recent form, including their 4-1 loss to Aston Villa, means a win is crucial against Everton if they want to remain in the European places in the Premier League table, so a change of personnel is a must.
