Callum Wilson can solve crippling West Ham issue that Graham Potter avoided

Nuno Santo has a clear call to make on Callum Wilson at West Ham.

West Ham are in turmoil this season, and if things don’t change quickly, there is every chance that the London Stadium will be hosting Championship football next season.

Wherever you look, there is a big concern, though the biggest one that Santo faces with the Hammers is their threat going forward.

However, with the international break now upon us, the Hammers have time to address that, and Wilson could hold the key to it.

Callum Wilson needs to start for West Ham

Wilson isn’t the most eye-catching name, and given the direction West Ham were planning for, he is far from the ideal candidate.

However, if Santo is to turn things around at the London Stadium, the Englishman simply has to be the one chosen to lead the line.

Graham Potter continuously opted to start Niclas Fullkrug instead of him, in an experiment that truly showcased the biggest issue the Irons face.

So far this season, Wilson has played just 171 minutes and made just one start, but already has more goals than Fullkrug.

Via FotMob, 83.3 per cent of his attempted dribbles are completed, and that is something that the German is yet to even attempt.

Albeit from a small sample size, no Premier League striker averages more shots on target per 90 minutes than Wilson, who is equal with Erling Haaland at 2.1 per game.

Wilson starting games will not eradicate the concerns at the London Stadium, though it will certainly help to subdue some of those that have emerged offensively.

Callum Wilson’s Premier League record speaks for itself

In 244 Premier League appearances, Wilson has found the net 89 times.

For a player who has never been considered among a list of Premier League elites, that is a record that doesn’t get spoken about enough.

Wilson has had injury troubles over the years but when fit, he has showcased his ability to score goals at this level.

There is no doubt that West Ham need to sign an elite-level striker, but for now, Wilson is exactly what they need to get out of their current run of form.
