Begovic loan would make no sense for West Ham

There’s no doubt that West Ham United’s goalkeeping situation earlier this season was borderline depressing.

With number one Lukasz Fabianski out injured for two months, Roberto showed himself to be one of the worst ‘keepers in recent Premier League history.

David Martin then replaced him and did a fine job over a few games. But, despite Fabianski now being back to full fitness, it’s no surprise that the Hammers are being linked with various shot-stoppers in January.

Indeed, Sky Sports’ Premier League Twitter account revealed on Thursday that David Moyes’ side are keen on bringing former player Darren Randolph back from Middlesbrough.

That’s something that makes a fair bit of sense given the fact that he is one of the Championship’s better ‘keepers but has been fazed out at Boro of late.

However, what the tweet mentions after that is the alarming thing for West Ham fans. The Irons have apparently been offered the chance to take Bournemouth stopper Asmir Begovic on loan.

This is a man who has, at various times in recent years, lost his starting spot to the likes of Artur Boruc, Mark Travers and Aaron Ramsdale.

He is now out on loan in the footballing division par excellence that is the Azerbaijani top flight, starring for Qarabag.

He’s made 17 appearances and seems to be doing a solid enough job, but he’s certainly no answer for the London Stadium side.

Not only has the 32-year-old been out of form for a while now, but he’d only be a loan signing. That doesn’t solve the problem of the team’s lack of depth behind Fabianski moving forward.

Surely the Hammers are better off persisting with what they have until the end of the season, at which point they can see what they have in youngsters Nathan Trott and Joseph Anang.

In other West Ham news, a West Ham correspondent has praised one Hammer for a ‘world class’ moment on Wednesday.
