Wolves join West Ham in chase for Porto manager Sergio Conceicao
West Ham want Sergio Conceicao to replace David Moyes but they might face hefty competition from Wolves for the Portuguese manager.
Lisbon-based newspaper Correio da Manha reported West Ham’s interest in the current Porto boss on their front page on Friday, with Sport Witness relaying the information that the Irons want a manager experienced ‘at the highest European level’.
Italian giants Lazio are also credited with an interest in Conceicao.
But there could be a new team set to enter the race after Premier League rivals Wolves dropped a major bombshell on Friday afternoon with the news that their manager Nuno Espirito Santo is set to leave the club at the end of the season. [Wolves club website]
After the news of Espirito Santo broke respected journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed on his personal Twitter profile that Conceicao is being considered for the Molineux top job.
He wrote: “Wolves have contacted former Benfica manager Bruno Lage as the ‘main option’ to replace Nuno Espirito Santo who’s leaving the club. Talks ongoing.
“Sergio Conceicao was also in the list with 3 options but Bruno Lage is the favourite as of today. Final decision soon.”
Welcome to him, Wolves
Why on earth would we be looking at Conceicao to replace Moyes after the sensational season we have just enjoyed?
There’s still one more game left to go to secure European football next season, at home to Southampton on Sunday, but regardless of the outcome there can be no denying the miracles performed by Moyes.
Pep Guardiola might have something to say about it but for us, Moyes is a shoo-in for the Manager of the Year award.
To transform us from relegation candidates to Europa League hopefuls in less than 12 months is nothing short of exceptional, and it’s been done without any extravagant spending.
He deserves to have his shot at European football with the Irons, irrespective of whether Conceicao is more qualified.
Clubs always have to keep an open mind on managers and target alternatives in case of the worst, but we’re sure Moyes’ job is not under imminent threat.
Hopefully Wolves take him and there will be no question about it.
In other West Ham news, Irons make contact with La Liga giants for exit-bound defender who cost £26m in 2019.
