WHZ View: Against all odds, Moyes very deserving of new West Ham contract
West Ham are set to reward manager David Moyes with a new contract at the end of the season.
According to the Guardian, the Scot will be offered a new deal altogether despite there being an option to extend for a year on his current 18-month long contract, signed in December 2019.
Moyes has lead the Hammers to seventh in the Premier League table at the halfway point of the season, amounting 32 points in the process.
A winning mentality
It’s been a remarkable start to 2021, and goes to show the fine work David Moyes has done since taking over for a second time in December 2019.
Upon his return, the club were flirting with relegation once again, sat 17th after 19 games having just lost 2-1 at home to Leicester City.
Moyes has since solidified West Ham as a force to be reckoned with in the Premier League. The signings of Tomas Soucek, Jarrod Bowen, and Vladimir Coufal in particular have transformed the team. The trio brought an excellent work rate and a lot of goals to a squad out of ideas under Pellegrini.
Having initially turned their back on Moyes, owners David Gold and David Sullivan have been humbled by the turnaround. The pair are keen to tie him down to a deal that goes beyond their initial offer of a year’s extension.
We here at West Ham Zone think this is absolutely the right decision. It was harsh to not give him an opportunity the first time, although the appointment of Pellegrini did initially excite.
Moyes recently hailed this squad at the ‘new West Ham’ and we’re all for it. In signing young and hungry talent he’s won the full backing of the fanbase. He’s bucked the trend of snapping up PL has-beens after a payday on ludicrous contracts.
The belief and desire installed into this squad has been very refreshing for fans to witness. Admittedly, we don’t play fantastic football all the time but we keep getting results.
After repeated seasons of relegation scraps, it’s very exciting to see a squad of such good balance that all work hard for one another and the manager.
We host Doncaster today in the FA Cup fourth round at the London Stadium.
Despite the 40 position’s difference in the English pyramid, this is by no means an easy tie. Donny are flying this season, currently sat fourth in League One with seven wins in eight games.
David Moyes and his squad will go into the game with confidence having been on a winning streak of our own. Victory today will be our fifth in a row as we aim to push on to the next round.
In other West Ham news, Vladimir Coufal expects a tough afternoon at home to Doncaster.
