WHZ Top 3s: Top three West Ham PL comebacks
Welcome to West Ham Zone’s Top 3s series, where we will take look through Hammers history and decide which people or events rank highest with topics as varied as players, managers and goals…
West Ham have been part of some memorable comebacks in their history, unfortunately on both the winning and losing side.
There is something special about completing a comeback. When all hope seems gone at half time only for a late flurry of goals to secure a point, or sometimes all three.
We have picked some truly memorable games for this list and some of them could potentially slip into a list of best Hammers games of all time, but that’s a list for another day.
We are taking a look at the top three West Ham comebacks in recent years. There have been plenty to choose from so it only seemed fair to limit our options down a bit.
Weirdly, all of these picks took place away from Upton Park or the London Stadium, read into that what you will.
Here are West Ham Zone‘s top three Hammers comebacks of the Premier League era.
3.) West Brom 3 – 3 West Ham February 12, 2011
West Ham found themselves 3-0 down after half an hour on their trip to The Hawthorns in 2011 as it looked as though the Hammers were going to succumb to another defeat as they sat in the relegation zone. Step up Demba Ba on his full Hammers debut. The Senegalese forward scored either side of a Carlton Cole strike to level the scores in the second half. Ba’s late equaliser was a great moment and secured a point but it didn’t help the Hammers avoid finishing bottom of the league that season.
2.) Tottenham 3 -3 West Ham October 18, 2020
This shouldn’t take too much explaining, it happened last month. But what a comeback. The Hammers were down and out after 15 minutes when they found themselves 3-0 down to a rampant Tottenham. However, West Ham rode their luck and grew into the game and a late surge saw David Moyes’ side clinch an unlikely point. Culminating in Manuel Lanzini’s outrageous strike in the 94th minute this was one for the ages, imagine if there were fans in that away end…
1.) Everton 2 -3 West Ham March 5, 2016
What a game. After 77 minutes the Hammers were 2-0 down to the 10 men of Everton with little hope of getting anything out of the match. But with 12 minutes to go, Michail Antonio got one, then three minutes later Diafra Sakho levelled things up. Then, in the 90th minute who else but Dimitri Payet tucks home a third and Hammers fans are in dreamland. The complete turnaround was so unexpected and summed up the never say die attitude of the squad. It could’ve been this or the Spurs game at number one, but this is top because it was a win rather than a draw.
In other West Ham news, Moyes has given the green light for the club to try and sign a former transfer target.
