West Ham youngster to get La Liga loan in bid for first-team football

West Ham United defender Goncalo Cardoso could be set for a loan move to La Liga Santander side Real Betis this month, according to Diario Record.

The 21-year-old has spent the first half of this season on loan at FC Basel in Switzerland but has struggled to force his way into their side and has since been recalled by the Hammers.

The Portuguese central defender could be set for a second chance in 2021-22 if a deal is agreed between West Ham and Betis.

Diario Record also claim that the loan deal includes an option to buy for the Spanish club who are chasing Champions League football in La Liga, just as the Hammers are in the Premier League.

Not done enough

It isn’t a great loss for West Ham and David Moyes really, considering that the 21-year-old has never played a minute for the club since he joined from Boavista in 2019.

Being 21 as well, if he was ever going to be good enough for the Hammers, he would have featured at least occasionally in the first-team squad.

West Ham

But he hasn’t and he is now being overtaken in the ranks by younger players which has seemingly spelt the end of his time at the London Stadium.

Things could still turn out well for Cardoso though as he must have something about him to have been picked up by West Ham in the first place.

A side of Real Betis’ prowess wouldn’t be sniffing around either if he wasn’t up to much so this may not be the last we see of Cardoso on the pitch.

His time wasn’t meant to be but West Ham fans won’t be losing sleep over his departure, and neither will David Moyes, he has bigger fish to fry.

In other West Ham news, a deal to sign this 27-goal striker could be in jeopardy.
