West Ham will not try to sign £50m Brentford striker Ivan Toney, David Moyes looking elsewhere

West Ham are not planning on signing Brentford striker Ivan Toney, contrary to reports, as he isn’t good value according to Claret & Hugh.

90min reported this week that the Hammers were joined by Arsenal as “admirers” of the 26-year-old, while Everton, Newcastle and Wolves are “keeping a watchful eye”.

But with David Moyes previously rejecting the chance to sign the forward before he moved to the Bees, and the 90min report suggesting they would want £50million for him, the Scot apparently isn’t interested at that price.

Toney has scored 12 Premier League goals this season and assisted three more as the top-flight newcomers find themselves safely in mid-table, but that isn’t enough to convince the Irons boss.

According to Hugh Southon: “A Hammers source told us exclusively: “It won’t happen as the manager has other targets at what he considers better value.”

The manager is famously cautious with his club’s money and at the price quoted it makes sense in this instance.

While he was ready to pay somewhere around that amount for Benfica’s Darwin Nunez in January, the Uruguayan is a cut above Toney.

It looks like Nunez’s quality has put him out of Moyes’ reach now for the summer with most of Europes top teams competing for his signature.

That will force the Hammers to look for an alternative as they once again look to provide some support for Michail Antonio up front.

After an empty January window there will surely be significant activity once the season is over.

The squad needs strengthening, and considering the run to the Europa League semi-finals it is surprising they are maintaining such success this season.

If they want to mount a more sustained attack in the league next year, and with the possibility they could be in the Champions League, they will need reinforcements.
