West Ham want to sign Middlesbrough defender Paddy McNair
West Ham are reportedly keen on signing Middlesbrough and former Manchester United defender Paddy McNair in January.
According to the Northern Echo, the Boro manager Chris Wilder is unwilling to let go of the 26-year-old.
He said, “Paddy is a really good player and is somebody we want to keep and build around because he’s got all the attributes.”
McNair, who has 33 Premier League caps to his name and is a full Northern Ireland international, has been at the Riverside for the last three seasons.
The report claims that Celtic are tracking the centre-back along with the Hammers.
Not Hammers level
McNair may have some Premier League experience, but it was at the weakest Manchester United squad in decades.
He played a handful of games for a Sunderland side that got relegated, so he’s never managed to really prove himself.
While he’s certainly not the player he was during his stint in the English top flight, there are doubts as to whether or not he would be an upgrade on Issa Diop and Craig Dawson.
McNair has been lauded for his “incredible” resurgence at Boro, but he first needs to prove his worth at a bottom half Premier League side before making the move to the London Stadium.
The Hammers are fighting for top four and he’s not the kind of player who can get them to that next level.
Ideally, they should scout one of the big leagues for a Europa League or even a Champions League side who are willing to offload their centre-back in January.
