West Ham want to sign £30m-rated striker Gabriel Barbosa in January

West Ham are considering making a move for Flamengo striker Gabriel Barbosa, known as Gabigol in January, according to 90min.

The Hammers had a bid rejected for the Brazilian international in January 2020 when he was at Inter Milan [FC Inter News].

He made the permanent switch to Flamengo that month and has since become one of the most prolific strikers in South America, scoring 59 goals in two years.

90min claim that Gabigol is now keen to move back to Europe and that the Premier League is his preferred destination.

This has put West Ham on alert, while the report suggests that Arsenal, Everton, Aston Villa and Newcastle United are also tracking the 25-year-old.

The report adds that Flamengo will listen to offers in excess of £30m for Gabigol, who has three years left on his contract in Rio de Janeiro.

On fire

West Ham’s desire to buy a new striker in January is well-documented due to their lack of squad depth upfront.

Michail Antonio has played 90 minutes in all except one of their 13 Premier League matches this season, but the Hammers are unlikely to be able to depend on him for the whole campaign.

The fixture list is beginning to become more congested and this will continue to be the case if the club carry on progressing in the Europa League and domestic cup competitions.

As potential targets go, there will be few in better form than Gabigol at the moment. The 25-year-old has set South America alight over the last few years.

He was this year’s top scorer in the Copa Libertadores, netting 11 times as Flamengo reached the final before losing in extra-time to Palmeiras.

Having failed to make his mark at Inter Milan, the Brazilian obviously feels he has a point to prove in Europe and West Ham could be the ones to reap the benefits of that attitude.

A transfer fee of at least £30m would make Gabigol one of the most expensive signings in the club’s history, but if he helps them qualify for the Champions League then it could prove to be a bargain.

In other West Ham news, this is the player David Moyes must restore to the starting lineup against Brighton.
