West Ham want a centre-back capable of playing at left-back amid Nat Phillips links
West Ham would prefer to sign a centre-back capable of providing additional cover on the left if possible, according to Goal.
The Hammers are long-term admirers of Liverpool defender Nat Phillips, 24, but it remains to be seen whether they will be making a firm move for him this January given their preference.
The Reds want £15million for the want-away Englishman and did turn down an offer from Watford earlier this month, knocking back their bid to take the former Bolton man on loan until the end of the season, with an obligation to make the move permanent should they avoid relegation.

Needed
The Hammers are looking to kill two birds with one stone, and it is clear to see why David Moyes will want to sign someone versatile to bolster his defence.
However, Phillips can only play at centre-back, and it appears the London Stadium outfit will be looking elsewhere.
It is also hard to see them agreeing to pay £15million for the services of a centre-back right now as they do have Kurt Zouma returning to action pretty soon.
While Angelo Ogbonna remains out of the campaign, West Ham will have Issa Diop or Craig Dawson providing cover when needed.
A loan deal with an option to buy for Phillips would have suited Moyes, but Liverpool are clearly uninterested.
Nevertheless, nothing can be ruled out and a lot can change towards the end of the transfer window, but at the moment, West Ham do not have a chance in the race for the defender.

They also want a two-in-one signing in order to bolster their depth at the back, and that rules him out.
Given that they are still involved in three competitions, West Ham need to strengthen in such a position, and they need to do it quickly.
