West Ham v Sevilla ‘biggest European game in 41 years’ – Tony Cottee

There is no questioning the magnitude of tonight’s Europa League round of 16 second leg between West Ham and Sevilla for the home team.

It has been 41 years since the Irons have been in a quarter-final of a major European competition (not including the 1999 Intertoto Cup) and that is what is on the line tonight for David Moyes’ side.

They may be trailing 1-0 after the first leg at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan but they still have every chance to turn the game on its head and rewrite some club history.

Ex-Hammers striker Tony Cottee understands how crucial the game is for his former side and he could barely contain his excitement on his personal Twitter account.

“Off to see West Ham’s biggest European game in 41 years. Yes, they can beat Sevilla, but no predictions from me tonight, let’s just get through! I can’t wait for kick-off!!” Cottee said.

The ball is in our court

West Ham might be 1-0 down after the first 90 minutes of the tie but they still hold at least an even hand to their Spanish opponents.

Sevilla have already used their home advantage but could only get one goal in front and now the tables are turned and the London Stadium can provide the platform for the Irons to go out and win the game.

The magnitude of the game won’t be lost on the Hammers of today but they also can’t pay any attention to it when kick-off arrives because they will set themselves up for disaster if they do.

West Ham have no reason to do anything differently given they had the majority of the chances in Seville one week ago, they just didn’t take their chances.

That shouldn’t be a problem this time around though and by full-time, West Ham will be in the last eight of a continental competition again.
