West Ham unlikely to complete deadline day move for Duje Caleta-Car

West Ham are unlikely to make a move for Marseille centre-back Duje Caleta-Car in this window, according to The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas.

The Hammers have been linked with several central defenders this month following injuries to Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma.

However, while the Italian remains out of action till the end of the campaign, the Frenchman returned to action last weekend, with Craig Dawson playing alongside him, while Issa Diop remained on the bench.

Off?

It appears David Moyes is pleased with his current options at the back, with the trio now expected to see out the campaign.

Caleta-Car was on the Irons’ radar in recent days as he was last summer, but both clubs could not find an agreement.

West Ham clearly were unable to meet Marseille’s demands, but it is unclear whether they have opted to look elsewhere, or if they have ended their search for another centre-back entirely.

Zouma’s return came earlier than planned, and that would have changed their plans.

West Ham would not have had any choice but to bring in a new defender had the former Chelsea man not returned to action this month.

Nevertheless, they really could do with another option in that position in case of injuries or suspension.

Relying on just three senior options for the next six months is risky as they come, and lack of quality depth at the back could hurt their top-four chances.

There are still a few hours to go in the window, and it will be interesting to see whether they will sign a defender, but a deal for Caleta-Car appears off.
