West Ham United want Aaron Cresswell upgrade and Armando Borja in five-man transfer haul

West Ham are planning to make a summer move for Armando Broja as part of five players David Moyes wants to bring in, according to The Sun.

The Chelsea striker has impressed on loan at Southampton this season, scoring nine goals in all competitions, and the Saints are expected to rival the Hammers for a permanent deal.

A new centre forward is one of five recruits the Irons boss is planning, including an upgrade on left back Aaron Cresswell whose disastrous red card in Frankfurt last night (5 May) derailed the Europa League comeback.

The Sun’s report says: “SunSport understands that the Saints could quickly tie up a deal if they are willing to offer Broja similar wages to team-mates Che Adams and Adam Armstrong.

“But the Hammers are set to rival Southampton and could win the tussle with the offer of European football.

“The former Manchester United boss also wants to bring in a central midfielder and two centre-backs while they are exploring an upgrade on left-back Aaron Cresswell.”

Overhaul

The painful defeat in the semi-final that brought an end to the amazing European run demonstrated the need for incomings.

Michail Antonio has been plowing a lone furrow in the striking department since Sebastien Haller left, and ran himself into the ground last night.

But after he had given everything there was nobody to turn to in relief.

The 32-year-old Cresswell’s second red card of the knockout rounds doesn’t negate the service he has given the club across nearly 300 appearances, but may have hastened the search for his successor.

Although there are due to be some departures with Mark Noble retiring and Alex Kral’s loan ending, they have not played a great deal.

Injuries in defence have been an issue, and the same six or seven players have been expected to fill the midfield and attack game after game.

Declan Rice, whose own potential exit continues to linger, mentioned how hard it has been to play twice a week with such a small squad after the final whistle in Germany.

Requiring players who were already running on close to empty to stage a comeback when a man down for three quarters of the game proved too much, and made clear how vital summer signings now are.

In other West Ham news, there were “not good scenes” on the pitch after the final whistle last night.
