West Ham United u-turn still on table as David Moyes may stay despite Ruben Amorim talks

West Ham could still perform another u-turn on the future of David Moyes if he manages to qualify for Europe this season, according to Jacob Steinberg.

The Guardian journalist reported for the paper’s website on 22 April that the club are now “set to part company” with the Scot at the end of the campaign when his contract expires, as there is now an “acceptance within West Ham that change is needed”.

The dismal 5-2 at Crystal Palace a day earlier has made a departure “all but inevitable” with talks held over a possible move for Sporting boss and Liverpool target Ruben Amorim, who was spotted flying in from Portugal earlier in the day, but Steinberg suggests that nothing can be entirely ruled out yet due to the “unpredictable” nature of the club, who were set to offer Moyes a new two-year deal earlier this season.

So with the final decision still not made the door is still potentially ajar if he can secure a fourth-consecutive season of European football even now.

West Ham approach Liverpool manager target

The Hammers are currently eighth and have played more games than everyone around them, while their final four Premier League fixtures are against Liverpool, Chelsea, Luton and Manchester City, so a late flourish has to be considered unlikely.

Despite the valiant effort in midweek as the Irons were knocked out of Europe by Bayer Leverkusen to raise hopes that the season could still end on a high, the club came back down to earth with a huge crash as they were 4-0 down at Selhurst Park in just over half an hour.

And if Moyes could somehow pull off an unlikely qualification to at least the Europa Conference League it surely shouldn’t change things all the same.

If David Sullivan and the board want to keep him then they have to commit to that decision, but it seems increasingly obvious that they aren’t convinced and without the winning of that trophy a year ago he may well have been gone by now.

Ruben Amorim
It doesn’t look like Ruben Amorim will be David Moyes’ successor at West Ham United.

Moyes seems destined to have his time at the club remembered more fondly in years to come than it is currently, and the slow march towards his apparent exit doesn’t seem conducive to a high-functioning unit.

There would be some merit to giving him an extension, but there is also plenty in letting him go, yet if West Ham were going to do that then waiting until his current deal is up seems like the least productive way of going about things.

In other West Ham news, Moyes turned down a move to sign an ex-Premier League star with over 100 goal contributions.
