West Ham United two hours away from losing Craig Dawson on deadline day

West Ham United were just two hours away from potentially selling Craig Dawson on transfer deadline day, according to The Athletic.

The 32-year-old had made it clear to manager David Moyes that he had desires to move back to the West Midlands to be much closer to his family, that currently reside in Cheshire.

An agreement was in place for him to sign for Wolverhampton Wanderers on the final day of the summer transfer window and had a medical booked at Molineux.

But just two hours before that planned fitness test, West Ham were forced to pull the plug on the deal after Jan Bednarek rejected the London Stadium in favour of Aston Villa.

Dawson reluctantly accepted the decision and has since scored in the Conference League while pairing Kurt Zouma in central defence with Thilo Kehrer now occupying right-back.

Matter of time

He might not have got his move in the summer but come to January, Wolves may well get their man with only six months left on his contract by that time.

The Hammers will not get the big transfer fee that they would have been hoping for but they will at least get something rather than seeing him leave for nothing in the summer.

Wolves are in desperate need of a centre-half at the moment too with Ruben Neves filling in while Nathan Collins serves a three-match ban.

Moves will need to be made quickly in January to bring in a replacement although with Nayef Aguerd expected to be back in action by then, perhaps Moyes will take the risk and sign nobody.

He made that mistake last January though and saw Michail Antonio slowly break down by having to play almost every minute as the club’s only proper striker.
