West Ham United transfer to Sheffield Wednesday for Conor Coventry collapses
West Ham midfielder Conor Coventry’s move to Sheffield Wednesday appears to have hit the skids, according to Richard Cawley.
The SLP Sports editor took to Twitter to reveal the news on Thursday, 11 January, with the Hammers player all set to leave this month.
However, the 23-year-old will now have to look elsewhere as this deal is now off.
Via Twitter, Cawley wrote, “Got to love the transfer window…now does sound like Coventry to Sheffield Wednesday is off.”
Find alternate clubs
Coventry’s promising performances for West Ham’s reserves and during loan spells, his integration into the first team has been stunted.
The increased competition in the Hammers’ midfield, particularly with the signings of Edson Alvarez, James Ward-Prowse, and Lucas Paqueta last summer, has elevated the overall quality and depth of the squad.
These experienced additions have set a higher standard, making it challenging for Coventry to secure regular first-team opportunities.

While the 23-year-old midfielder has shown potential in lower-tier competitions, the demands and intensity of the Premier League, especially within a team competing for European places, necessitate a more mature and seasoned skill set.
Coventry’s development may benefit from further loan spells or sustained exposure to top-flight football to bridge the gap between his potential and the competitive standards set by West Ham’s strengthened midfield.
As a result, the failed move to Sheffield Wednesday may prompt Coventry to explore alternative clubs where he can continue his development and gain valuable first-team experience and the Hammers are unlikely to lose sleep if he leaves permanently.
