West Ham United transfer news: Serie A chief wants Gianluca Scamacca to stay despite his manager’s return plan

Sassuolo CEO Giovanni Carnevali wants Gianluca Scamacca to stay at West Ham despite strong links to a Serie A return, stating it’s too “early to go home”.

Roma have been pushing to bring the Italian international back to the league he left last summer, despite the Hammers so far refusing to entertain a loan exit.

Scamacca was a £35.5million signing from Sassuolo a year ago and struggled in his debut season in England, scoring just three Premier League goals, but Carnevali believes he needs to stay in East London to see it through for now.

Carnevali told Sport Mediaset, as per Voce Gallio Rossa: “Scamacca can make the difference in Serie A but right now I would prefer him to stay at West Ham, it’s still early to go home and he has all the potential to do well in the Premier League.”

That view contradicts that of his coach Alessio Dionisi, who had just suggested a return to Sassuolo would be be his only advice to the 24-year-old Hammers man [Football Italia, 29 June].

Backing

Carnevali appears to very much be in the minority on the Italian side as the overwhelming perspective from Scamacca’s home country seems to be in favour of a London Stadium exit.

There is no shortage of interest, with Roma apparently just the most prominent in a race which includes mooted interest from Juventus and both Milan giants over recent months.

His first season with West Ham was a disappointment but calling time on the move after just a year would be even more of a let down, barring a major offer landing on the table.

West Ham

There is apparently an expectation at the Stadio Olimpico that the Irons will soften their stance on a loan move before the end of the window, but considering that wouldn’t bring anything like the return on investment that a sale (or actual West Ham goals) would it is surely only a fallback option.

If David Moyes feels he can get a turn out of Scamacca after 12 months to get used to English football then he should absolutely keep him.

It was a major spend last summer and it would surely take another hefty outlay to find a replacement, so if there is any chance on making good on the current Irons ace that would be preferable.

In other West Ham news, the Irons are now in “advanced” negotiations for a key target ahead of multiple Premier League rivals.
