West Ham United transfer news: Kalvin Phillips medical update emerges as Manchester City deal close

Kalvin Phillips is due to have a medical at West Ham ahead of a loan move from Manchester City, according to Michael Plant.

The Manchester World journalist reported via Twitter on 23 January that the midfielder’s move to the London Stadium was “close” and the medical could either be conducted later the same day or the following one.

Phillips, 28, is said to be ready to join the Hammers in the January transfer window, with the treble-winners also expected to compromise on their hefty financial demands.

Plant wrote: “Hearing Kalvin Phillips to West Ham is close. Medical could even be tonight/tomorrow.”

The sooner this deal gets over the line the better now that it appears that the Hammers have made a major breakthrough in the past couple of days.

That would leave as much time as possible for Tim Steidten to work on reinforcements in attacking areas for David Moyes, which could make a major difference to the second half of the season.

There were some positive signs from Danny Ings and Maxwel Cornet against Sheffield United, but another immediate issue would be solved if Phillips is in imminently as it should be possible to plug him into the gap left by Edson Alvarez’s injury.

Moyes has been credited as the driving force behind the pursuit of the England international, despite an apparent lack of total agreement at the London Stadium.

So he will surely be delighted to come out on top of various big clubs in the Premier League and Europe to seemingly be now set to land the ex-Leeds United star.

Should West Ham be able to follow this deal up with some forward reinforcements, and perhaps even the long-awaited left-back addition it could end up being a belatedly strong window.

In other West Ham news, according to Dharmesh Sheth the Irons are now working on a pair of attacking deals before the deadline.
