West Ham United transfer news as Viktor Gyokeres closes in on £18.5m Coventry City exit

West Ham United target Viktor Gyokeres is closing in on an £18.5million switch to Sporting CP, according to the Daily Mail.

The publication noted that the Coventry City striker has had interest from the Hammers, along with their Premier League rivals Brentford and Everton.

It is, however, the Portuguese outfit who have made the best offer in the summer transfer window so far, as noted by the Daily Mail.

“Coventry striker Viktor Gyokeres is closing on an £18.5million move to Sporting Lisbon,” according to the Daily Mail.

“The Swede has had interest from Brentford, West Ham and Everton but Sporting have made the best offer so far.”

Major blow

There are two major reasons why several clubs are targeting the Coventry ace in the summer transfer window, the first of which is his phenomenal goals tally last season, where he scored 21 goals in 49 matches to help his club all the way to the Championship play-off final.

They ultimately lost on penalties to Luton Town at Wembley, but the striker’s efforts in the match and throughout the whole campaign have not gone unnoticed.

The second reason why he is being targeted now is because the talented forward has just 12 months remaining on his deal at current club Coventry.

That is enough to have seemingly sent several clubs into a battle for his signature, but if the latest reports are to be believed, the Hammers will miss out on the Swedish international.

A figure of £18.5million is a lot of money for a Championship striker, but the East London outfit do need more attacking firepower as they look to properly challenge on all fronts next season.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers have completed their first summer signing as the player pens a three-year deal at the club.
