West Ham United transfer news as Thilo Kehrer update emerges for January

Atalanta are testing the waters for West Ham United defender Thilo Kehrer ahead of the January transfer window, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Sky Sports journalist reported on his website on Wednesday (27 December) that the Serie A giants are currently probing in the background as they consider a potential offer for the German defender who looks set to depart the London Stadium.

Both Rome and AC Milan are also considering the out-of-favour West Ham man as they continue to look to strengthen their backlines having suffered with injuries, but Atalanta are considering a deal behind that pair.

David Moyes’ side have already dealt with the Italian giants this season and should Kehrer complete the switch to Italy, he would be reunited with former Hammer Gianluca Scamacca after he departed East London during the summer window.

Plenty of suitors

It has been clear for some time now that Kehrer’s long-term future lies away from West Ham as the defender is clearly not particularly high in Moyes’ defensive pecking order at the London Stadium.

Nayef Aguerd and Kurt Zouma have been the Scotsman’s preferred pair at the heart of defence while Konstantinos Mavropanos has stepped up as a more than able deputy and impressed with his performances during the Europa League campaign so far.

West Ham

Vladimir Coufal has been the main right-back and has been in reasonably good form this season, ensuring that Kehrer has been limited to brief cameos from the bench where he has struggled to show why he should be starting Premier League matches.

Often the difficult thing can be finding somebody to take this sort of player off of your hands, but it seems as though West Ham have plenty of interested parties long before the transfer window has even opened.

Hopefully, one of the three clubs named in Wednesday’s report will make a move for the 27-year-old and the Irons will be able to move him on. Then they can focus on reinvesting that money elsewhere ahead of the second half of the campaign.
