West Ham United transfer news as Roma chief to advance Gianluca Scamacca exit

AS Roma director Tiago Pinto is set to jet into London this week to advance in a move to sign West Ham United striker Gianluca Scamacca on loan, according to Fabrizio Romano.

West Ham shelled out £35m for Scamacca in a highly-anticipated summer move from Sassuolo, but due to recurring fitness issues and struggles with the tactical system under David Moyes, his time at the club may now be coming to an end.

Italian journalist Di Marzio reported on 9 June, that the Giallorossi had made contact with West Ham United to sign the forward following the long-term injury blow suffered by Tammy Abraham, and on Tuesday morning he revealed [13 June] that Scamacca had given the green light for a return to his former club.

And Romano, taking to his personal Twitter account [13 June] has revealed that Roma are now stepping up their desire for Scamacca with Hammers-linked transfer chief Pinto set to be in London later this week to speak to West Ham United about a potential loan deal.

He tweeted: “AS Roma director Tiago Pinto will be in London later this week in order to advance in negotiations with West Ham for Gianluca Scamacca.

“Roma will ask for Scamacca on loan as a replacement for Tammy Abraham after ACL injury.”

Sad to see him go

After the change of his agents and plenty of speculation regarding his future in East London, it’s looking increasingly likely that the former Sassuolo forward will move on this summer and West Ham United may well be resigned to losing him.

And fans will certainly be forgiven to be sad at the sight of seeing such a wonderful forward talent depart the London Stadium in yet another failed striker transfer which has become an unfortunate curse in East London for so long.

West Ham

It certainly seems like a return to Italy is well on the cards for Scamacca as he’s struggled to acclimatise himself to the English game. However, that really shouldn’t determine the West Ham United stance that he’s not good enough to cut it at this level.

At any other Premier League club, the Italian international may well have turned into a swift superstar because his tremendous qualities as a lone frontman certainly fits the calibre of forward plenty of clubs are scouring the market for.

But, unfortunately, that isn’t the case at West Ham United with David Moyes preferring a more rampaging, aggressive and workaholic-like striker in the ilk of Michail Antonio. Scamacca isn’t that type of player, with the Italian more skilled in playing with his back to goal, feeding his fellow teammates as well as creating chances on his own.

It’s such a shame that this move hasn’t worked out, and West Ham United may well be foolish to give up on him so easily but given his desire to move back to his homeland, it’s unlikely we’ll see him in a Hammers shirt again.
