West Ham United transfer news as ‘plural’ January priority emerges amid Wilfried Gnonto update

West Ham United are still looking to sign multiple forwards during the January transfer window after completing a deal for Kalvin Phillips, according to Alan Nixon.

The Sun journalist reported on his X account on Monday (22 January) that David Moyes remains keen to add more than one attacking option to his squad before the end of the month, even after completing the signing of the Manchester City midfielder.

However, Leeds United winger Wilfried Gnonto is not currently a target for the Hammers “at the moment” suggesting that the Irons are looking away from Elland Road for the late additions this month.

Replying to a question asking about West Ham’s transfer plans, Nixon wrote, “Forwards. Plural.” Having then been asked whether Gnonto was one of them, he replied: “Don’t think so. At the moment anyway.”

Nixon had earlier reported on his Patreon page [22 January] that Phillips has chosen to join the Hammers on loan this month and they will pay his wages and a bonus, as they think it is worth the money to chase a strong finish to the season.

Plural

The January transfer window at the London Stadium is panning out in a remarkably similar fashion to the summer, with the Hammers leaving their business until the end of the window before bursting into life in the closing stages.

While a deal for Phillips alone would have represented a smart piece of January business, the acquisition of two new forward options would round off an incredible month’s work for those in charge of recruitment.

Whether or not the Hammers will be able to get two forward deals over the line in just over a week of the window remains to be seen, as currently, it doesn’t seem to be particularly clear who they are exactly targeting.

That will likely become more apparent in the next few days. Hopefully, all prospective additions will be completed smoothly and successfully so that West Ham are able to kick on and enjoy the second half of the season at the right end of the table.
