West Ham United transfer news as Crystal Palace make approach for Maxwel Cornet
Crystal Palace have made an approach to sign West Ham forward Maxwel Cornet ahead of the January transfer window deadline, according to Sami Mokbel.
The Daily Mail journalist reported via X [31 January] that American-owned club have made a tentative enquiry as they look to bolster their squad.
It is understood that Nottingham Forest were interested in signing Cornet too after it looked like they were going to miss out on Borussia Dortmund’s Giovanni Reyna.
Time to go
Cornet is certainly not at the correct level to be playing for West Ham, having failed to make any real impact since arriving from Burnley in August 2022.
The winger has made 31 appearances in all competitions, many from the flank as a substitute, but has only managed to net one goal. This has been a vast difference from his form with the Clarets, having scored nine goals in 28 performances.
Although Cornet is extremely versatile, evidenced by his ability to play left-back during his Burnley spell, there is little room for the 27-year-old in David Moyes’ side.
He proved in his performance against Bristol City in the FA Cup that West Ham would be best getting rid of him during the January transfer window and Palace may have just offered the club that opportunity.

Cornet was part of the trio of Danny Ings and Said Benrahma that failed to capitalise on their golden opportunity when injuries struck Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta, with Mohammed Kudus also on international duty.
Moyes will need reinforcements heading into the second half of the season but the departure of Cornet will not have a lasting impact if any last-minute deal does go through.
In other West Ham news, David Moyes is now concerned over the temperament of a first-team regular and may decide to axe him after a recent transfer development.
