West Ham United transfer news as £40m payment development emerges in Kalvin Phillips deal

West Ham United will likely have to pay near £40million to sign Kalvin Phillips permanently during the summer transfer window, according to Claret and Hugh.

The outlet reported on its website on Friday (19 January) that should the Hammers be keen on signing the England international on a permanent deal later this year, they’ll likely have to match the figure Manchester City paid Leeds United

David Moyes’ side are reportedly in the “box seat” to sign the 28-year-old on loan for the second half of the season, despite plenty of interest from teams in Europe and the Premier League, including Newcastle United [Ryan Taylor, 19 January].

Wait and see

Whether or not Phillips is worth that price come the end of the season entirely depends on how the next few months pan out, should he make the permanent switch to the London Stadium for the second half of the campaign.

If he sets the world alight under the management of Moyes and returns to the level of form that made him such a force at Elland Road and one of England’s best players at Euro 2020, £40million will almost be a steal for the Hammers.

However, should the 28-year-old fail to rediscover that form and continue to flatter to deceive as he has done at the Etihad, where he has only played 16 times in the Premier League in the last 18 months, West Ham will not be willing to pay anywhere near that price.

The advantage of the initial loan deal will be the fact that the Irons can try before they buy. They won’t have to make a huge financial commitment either way and can instead take their time to come to a decision over a permanent transfer.
