West Ham United transfer business a ‘strange situation’ – Paul Brown

West Ham United may not have as much money to spend in the transfer market as they first thought, according to Daily Star journalist Paul Brown.

The Irons have already bought three players this summer with Nayef Aguerd arriving from Stade Rennes to shore up the defence, Alphonse Areola returning permanently in goal and Flynn Downes ready to offer cover in midfield after joining from Swansea City.

But that trio is not enough for David Moyes and West Ham who still need two or three more new additions to the squad before they are ready to take on reigning champions Manchester City on the opening day at the London Stadium.

Brown thinks that things could get difficult for the Hammers later in the window as they try to spend smart more than big.

“West Ham are saying they want to end the window having signed five or six players,” he told Give Me Sport. “It’s a strange situation at West Ham because there’s a lot of talk that they don’t have the money people thought they had, although they still seem to be targeting a quite high calibre of player.”

Natural

It shouldn’t come as any kind of surprise to us that we might not have the money to make all the signings we had hoped for this summer considering how little we have sold.

There hasn’t really been any big sales as of yet with the only exits being free transfer who have made some sizeable room in the wage budget for our new signings.

We haven’t gained the transfer revenue from a sale like Declan Rice or Jarrod Bowen to help fund a further three or four new signings under the financial fair play rules so we need to sell before we can buy.

Rice and Bowen are the two we should not get rid of but there is deadwood in the squad that we could easily get rid of to fund our future transfer endeavours.

Issa Diop and Angelo Ogbonna are two we could easily lose as well as Manuel Lanzini who could provide the backbone for our squad rebuild.
