West Ham United: Tony Cottee ‘gutted’ after what happened in 2-0 loss v Bayer Leverkusen

Tony Cottee has been left feeling “gutted” following the West Ham defeat against Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday (11 April).

The pundit tweeted on Thursday that he didn’t feel that way because the Hammers lost the quarter-final first leg, but because it ended 2-0, with Jonas Hofmann and Victor Boniface both scoring in the closing stages of the game.

He claims the Irons defended well for 80 minutes and a one-goal defeat would have been a “fair result”, adding that it’s going to be an “interesting” second leg at the London Stadium.

Second Bayern Leverkusen goal hammer blow for West Ham

It’s safe to say that most people associated with West Ham would have been reasonably content to go into the second leg with just a one-goal deficit.

It looked as though we were actually going to come away with a draw before the final 10 minutes, which would have been a superb result.

But we just lost a bit of concentration towards the end and that second goal could prove to be a hammer blow to our hopes of making it through to another semi-final.

While we didn’t offer too much going forward, there were brief moments in the game, particularly when Michail Antonio was involved, to suggest we can cause them problems.

David Moyes knows he’s going to have to throw caution to the wind next week and it’s down to the fans to back the team and give them that extra push to try and turn things around at the London Stadium.
